Running in the Summer Among the Rocky Mountains
If someone had told me that I would be running up and down mountains and spending summers surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the country, I would not have believed them. My move to Colorado years ago brought me to Denver, where I began dreaming of having a small mountain home. In January 2024, that dream became a reality when my family closed on a cozy townhome in Leadville, Colorado. This place, known as 'Cloud City,' is famous for the Leadville 100-mile race with the silhouettes of the two highest mountains, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive.
My first winter running at over 10,000 feet was significantly colder than Denver, with more than 125 inches of snowfall annually. I enjoyed many out-and-back routes ranging from 10K to 15K from my home. I soon discovered that running in nature was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I adapted to the colder temperatures and realized how significantly running benefited my well-being. It made me happier, more alive, and I found that my best ideas emerged while I was racing. I also met amazing people and felt deeply connected to my surroundings.
Summer opened up many opportunities for exploration, one of my favorites being the route from Independence Pass to Aspen. This area is stunning, filled with lush greenery in the summer and vibrant yellow aspens in the fall. The road typically closes in early October and remains closed until May. What motivates you day-to-day? Stay tuned for more photography of Independence Pass and Aspen, Colorado, during the summer and fall. The Rocky Mountains offer a breathtaking portfolio of peaks that inspire me.
